English’s first Broadswords and Ballrooms Regency unites a Highlander and a proper English miss in a very improper romance. Alex Waters is only gracing the ballroom at Almack’s in order to find a suitable husband for his hoydenish sister, Mary Elizabeth. But he is impressed by the kindness and beauty of Catherine Middlebrook, the only lady present who willingly listens to his sister speak about unladylike pursuits. As Mary Elizabeth and Catherine become friends, Alex spends more time in Catherine’s company, and his attraction to her grows with each encounter. While they enjoy some romantic interludes, Catherine knows that there is no future for them. She must wed a wealthy man—perhaps Lord Farleigh, who has expressed his interest but doesn’t engage her heart or spark her desire—to save her family from destitution, and Alex has told her that he has no interest in marrying. The allure of Catherine and Alex’s romance propels the novel forward as his promise to protect her opens up the possibility of their future together, and the love triangle provides plenty of angst even though the outcome is never really in doubt.
